Greetings all, Maureen Foley chiming in. I'm a reading specialist in the Abington School District. I just ordered my book and am so excited to read about and discuss this relevant topic. Drug addiction, rising suicide rates, disengaged and stressed-out kids are things we are all too familiar with these days. Great topic!

Hi there - happy to be part of this group. I am a teacher-librarian at Overlook Elementary in Abington School District. (Hi Maureen Foley :) I just ordered the book - really looking forward to this timely topic. I know I often feel stressed in the effort to balance my passion for teaching children to love books and the push to incorporate 21st Century future ready tech activities into the school library...Want to make sure I am a peaceful presence for the children as I strive to do my best in these challenging times....

What an honor to have my book selected for the winter book club! The fact that you are taking time to connect and share speaks volumes about the kind of educators that you are. This book has numerous personal practices to cultivate presence, consider finding one that you are willing to “try on”, commit to trying it for a week and see if you notice that you’ve found a bit more ease in your daily life. Here’s a new practice that I’ve adopted since the publication of the book. A friend of mine, Stephen Hurley, who has designed Voice Ed. Radio https://voiced.ca/ has a tradition of choosing a “word of the year”. Basically, you pick a word to inspire you (listen here to hear more about it https://voiced.ca/practicing-presence-with-dr-lisa-lucas/) So, I’m going to use my word this year in a very intentional way. Every time I read, hear, or encounter my word in any form, I will pause, and take an intentional breath. My word for 2019 is “light”.

Thank you, Lisa. It is wonderful having you join us as we read/share thoughts about the importance of "presence." in our professional and personal lives. I had chosen the word "lighter" as my word for the year. Travel lighter in as many ways that invite me to feel less stressed, more energetic, and more attentive to each new day. I look forward to the discussion.

Hi All! I am super excited about Lisa Lucas' PRACTICING PRESENCE as an antidote to the craziness and stress in the lives of teachers and, for that matter, in the lives of all of us. Yes, it is important to learn best practices in literacy based on current research. But it may be equally critical to learn and share with students ways in which to make our lives more calm and less stressful. Perhaps literacy practices and peaceful ways can be combined. 'Looking forward to the discussion.

My name is Kristen Craig and I am a K - 8 Reading Specialist and Literacy Curriculum Coordinator at a charter school in North Philadelphia. With the demands of teaching students ever rising, many of the teachers I work with struggle to find balance and satisfaction with their work efforts. I am excited to join this book club to find strategies to share with the team of teachers that I work with and for myself.

Hi everyone, I'm late to this game, but I'm happy to be joining the book club! I work at Penn State Brandywine as a reference and instruction librarian, though my research focuses on engaging students with recreational reading. I lead a student book club on campus and I'm also happy to be working with Tyler Arboretum to hold a book club later this spring.

Hi, Everyone! Happy to be joining the book club. With a full-time position, part-time work, a husband, and four kids (and a dog...), I am looking forward to learning how to be more "present" myself and then, in turn, helping my teachers and students to do the same!!

I have been reading, and rereading the beginning chapters. There is so much to digest. I have become more aware when I am NOT present! I am beginning to use some gratitude strategies, especially before falling asleep. I so appreciate the author's honesty and true self reflection. I can relate to many of the feelings she discusses. I am retired and do not in any way have the same stresses I had when teaching 1st graders, however I have developed several self imposed situations which have caused great stress. The fact that I have realized this is an accomplishment. I wish I had this book 20 years ago!
